The Art of the Thai Sword

The art of the Thai sword has existed since ancient times, preserved as a treasured inheritance of the Thai people and passed down through countless generations to the present day.

In earlier times, there were many schools and traditions of Thai swordsmanship. Each era, village, and province cultivated its own systems of martial practice—whether in unarmed combat or in the use of weapons. These traditions were developed and refined over time, often tested through friendly contests of skill, and at times carried into battle side by side in times of war.

From this arose the diversity of martial lineages and the distinct forms of weaponry shaped by each region. Such diversity, in turn, became a strength of the Siamese people, offering a wide and rich variety of martial knowledge.

In 1935 (B.E. 2478), Master Nak Thephasadin Na Ayudhya gathered together various sword traditions and formally introduced the teaching of Krabi Krabong in Thailand for the first time. He recognized its value in cultivating courage and strength of character, in training the body to become agile and capable of self-defense and weapon use, and in fostering discipline, concentration, and gratitude toward one’s teachers.

Following the success of its introduction to students, Krabi Krabong was officially incorporated in 1936 (B.E. 2479) into the curriculum for the Physical Education Teacher Training Program. From that time onward, it has held its place as an enduring part of Thai martial heritage.
